Obituary for David E. Carman (Feb 18, 1945 - Dec. 24, 2015) A beloved father, husband, and friend took up residence in heaven over the Christmas holidays, where he joined his mother, father, brother, sister-in-law, various aunts and uncles, and all of the dogs he's ever raised in his lifetime. He started off life as a humble farm boy, born in Fort Madison, Iowa to Eva May (Fischer) and James Norman Carman, and was one of six children. He enjoyed your typical teenage pranks such as driving the getaway car from evenings spent throwing watermelons at the high school principle's mobile home (this is evidently a good precursor to a future as an FBI Agent). He attended the University of Iowa where he obtained his Bachelor's and Juris Doctorate degrees, and spent his summers working on the rail road laying new track. Wanting to get out Iowa, and looking for adventure, he applied for, and was accepted into the FBI in1969. He took a leave of absence from the FBI (1971-1974) during the Vietnam War (where he eventually served) and completed Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia and was commissioned a second lieutenant, and graduated from Airborne & Special Forces school. Despite a fear of the dark, claustrophobia, and fear of heights, he managed to 'grit his teeth' and he went onto become a Green Beret. Upon returning to the USA, he returned to the FBI and served as a Special Agent until 2002 in the New York and San Francisco offices. While in NY, he rounded out his need for adventure and fun by joining the SWAT team which he served as team leader. After his retirement, he was rehired by the FBI as a consultant following the 9-11 attack and served in the NY Office's Security Squad from 2003-2005. His career with his much loved FBI spanned a total of 35 years. While in NY, he lived in Manhasset and was an active member of The Congregational Church of Manhasset. His favorite place for breakfast was Louie's where he always ordered the blueberry pancakes, and for the record, was a fan of Gino's pizzeria. He loved traveling, food, NASCAR, gardening, Christmas, John Wayne movies, Johnny Cash, and his 5 grandchildren (plus one due to be born in late May/early June). While in CA, he lived in Walnut Creek and the Lamorinda area, and was a member of Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church. He leaves behind his wife Helen Carman (Lee) and their daughter, Celine Nicole Sherwood (nee Carman), and one step-son, Michael Chang. His posse of grandchildren include: Benjamin Patrick, Eva Sofia, and Lillian Miriam (children of Shon and Celine Sherwood of Moraga, CA, who have been ordered to keep going until they have another boy) and Lauren Ella and Emma Sophia (daughters of Michael and Betty Chang of Round Rock, TX). He lived his life with great dignity, grace, love, and pragmatism. He will be greatly missed, but we're happy he had the opportunity to spend Christmas (his favorite holiday) with Jesus. Oak Park Hills Chapel has proudly served families throughout Contra Costa County, California, for over 60 years. Our business' history begins when Roger Magleby, who was a pioneer in air-sea scatterings and a pilot, established our business in what was once a military medical staging and processing building for Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, California. Ever since, we've had a special relationship with our military families and we are proud to be certified as Veterans Funeral Specialists....
