David "PaPa" S. Countryman
April 1st, 1948 - August 5th, 2015
David "PaPa" S. Countryman, 67, of Gloversville passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 1, 1948 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late Stanley and Rita Kernan Countryman. David was a 1966 graduate of Canajoharie High School then went on to receive his Associates Degree in Applied Science from Paul Smith College in 1968. He proudly served his country during Vietnam in the Army assigned to the American Division of 196th Light Infantry Brigade. David was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious service during Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam David became a New York State Forest Ranger serving his community for over 29 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Gloversville Lodge 35, lifetime member of the VFW and an active supporter of Honor Flight. Survivors include his daughter Tina Kelly (John) of Canajoharie; son Robert White of Kansas City, MO; brother Michael J. Countryman of Canajoharie; sister Edith Countryman Fleig of Canajoharie; seven grandchildren Nicholas Ryder (Meghan), Kyle White (Fiancé Jeseanne), Aleta Ayers (Chris), Caleb White, Seth White, Anthony Comstock-Kelly, Cheyenne "Sweetcheecks" Kelly; three step-grandchildren Ray Breece, Veronica Kelly and John Kelly (Kristine); great grandson Kathum White and his dog companion Lady Countryman. David is also survived several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Mary "MeMe" Aleta Shibley Countryman whom he married May 24, 1975. A celebration of life service to honor David will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 12:00 P.M. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville with Rev. Dr. RW Williams officiating. Calling hours to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be held on Sunday, August 9 from 3-6 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the Village of St. Johnsville Municipal Cemetery, St. Johnsville, NY. Family graciously declines flowers.
