David R. Earnest

Dave Earnest passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Dave was born on June 29, 1953 in Portland, Oregon to Jack and Lois “Pat” Earnest. He was the youngest of three sons. He enjoyed his childhood growing up on Long Street in SE Portland. Dave graduated from Franklin High School, where he participated in cross country running. Dave earned a Bachelors degree in Marketing and Business from Marylhurst University. 

Dave met Patty Buffetta, his high school sweetheart, and were married in September of 1972. The two have been inseparable throughout the years. 

Dave’s greatest achievement were his two sons, Patrick David and Andrew David. He was a wonderful father and was actively involved in everything his children were interested in. Whether it be coaching sports or volunteering at school, he was always the first one to sign up. 

He joined Hyster Company in Portland, Oregon in the Spring of 1972 and played a significant role across facilities and public relations throughout his 43-year tenure, retiring in 2018. The love that he had for the people of Hyster had no bounds. He enjoyed going to work each day to be with his “second” family. 

He had a love for all things automotive. Whether it be antiques, classics, or brand new, he was a fan. Over the years he owned everything from Volkswagen bugs, to a Ford Model A, and various sports cars including his favorite Porsche.

Dave was also a sports fanatic.  He cheered on his Portland Trailblazers with enthusiasm. Loved the Oregon Ducks and watched college sports for hours on end.

He enjoyed traveling and was always up for a road trip.  A favorite destination was the Oregon Coast. Trips to Palm Springs with the family were a highlight for Dave. He was a “foodie” and enjoyed a fine dining experience wherever they were. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pat Earnest. He is survived by his wife Patty of 51 years, sons, Patrick and Andrew both of Portland.  

Dave was surrounded with love by family and friends in his final days. In true fashion, his main concern until the end was ensuring his family was cared for.
