David Michael Free

1947 - 2024

"Life is like a guitar and the combination of chords are called moments. Playing them is the called living the moments."

Michael Free, age 77 of Gate City, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 24, 2024.  Michael was born on August 5, 1947, in Kingsport, TN to Harold and Virginia Free.  Michael proudly, unselfishly and courageously served his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army.

Michael loved playing guitar and listening to classical music.  You could often find Michael at the local convenient store playing his favorite scratch off lottery tickets.  He was known as a “professional lottery player”; winning many times throughout his life.  However, his most precious winning is his son, Michael.  Michael loved Christmas and he was always eager to cook for his family.  Michael truly left a wonderful legacy for his family to carry on, and for generations to come.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lesley W. Free; niece, Vanessa Free; and aunt / uncle, Irene and Grady McDavid.  Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Michael Free; sister, Lesa Free Ryan; brother, Philip Free and wife Shelia; niece, Heather Cox; nephew, Jason Ryan; great niece, Aftyn Cox, great nephew, Greg Cox; and two aunts, Janet Free Cox, and Betty Free.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, VA.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm with Elder Bill Tignor officiating.  A graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery at 3:00 pm with Michael’s family and friends serving as pallbearers.  Serving as honorary pallbearers are Curtis Sturgil and Doug Gillenwater.
