David Michael McClain

David Michael McClain Dave McClain, long-time resident of Paradise, CA, was born on March 17, 1949 in Berkeley, CA and passed away on October 29, 2015 in Chico, CA after a short illness surrounded by love from his family and friends. Dave was raised in Marin County by his parents, Leo "Mac" and Inelda Williams McClain. He graduated from University of Denver and University of San Diego Law School. Dave practiced law in Palo Alto for several years before becoming Deputy County Counsel for Butte County in 1989. He retired in 2007 to spend time in travel with his beloved wife of 21 years, Patricia Cragar. Dave was a gentleman of impeccable manners, a dapper dresser even when in his preferred Hawaiian shirts, and he had a wicked sense of humor that always kept family and friends laughing. Travel, reading, wood carving, archery, and playing with his cats were some of his favorite hobbies. He had a very quick mind and a phenomenal memory. Dave is survived by his wife Patricia Cragar of Paradise, daughter Kaitlin McClain McLean (Evan) of Redding and son Roger McClain of Ashland, OR. He is also survived by his brother Walt McClain (Diane), niece Allysen McClain of San Rafael, stepdaughter Katherine Laufman (Matt) of El Dorado Hills, grandchildren Tessa Laufman and Jeremy Wolf, and numerous cousins on the West Coast and in the South. He is also survived by his beloved cats: Smudge, Marilyn, and Lucy. Dave will be missed by many good friends including his first wife, Debbie Miller, high school friend Kurt, Navy buddy, Doug, and his many other good friends from Butte County and the Bay Area. There will be no services at Dave's request. Friends and family are encouraged to honor Dave's life with a memorial gift to the Enloe Regional Cancer Center in care of the Enloe Foundation, 249 W. 6th Avenue, Chico, CA 95926, the Town of Paradise Animal Shelter at 925 American Way, Paradise, CA 95969, or to the Butte County Animal Shelter on their website buttehumane.org.
