Funeral Alternatives of Washington - Tumwater
David Nelson Shattuck
March 7th, 1943 - February 18th, 2017
David Nelson Shattuck, 73, passed away February 18, 2017 at Capital Medical Center in Olympia, Washington. He was born March 7, 1943 to Nelson Henry and Evelyn Pearl Shattuck in Olympia. Dave graduated from Olympia High School in 1961. He married Roxanne Merryman in 1975, and they renewed their vows in 2015. From February 1967 to his retirement in January 2004, Dave was in the shipping business as a Longshoreman and was a member of the ILWU-PMA Local Union #47. Dave had many interests and hobbies in life. As a young boy and man, he spent time working on his parents’ farm, hunting and fishing with his friends, motorcycle riding, and riding his horse, Jinx. He spent many hours working on his bicycles, cars, and motorcycles. He was in a band, The Royals, with two of his best buddies, Bill and Alvin. They played at the area Community Center, Eagles, and The Evergreen Ballroom (The Green), to name a few. Dave was one of the lucky ones who was able to check off many things on his “bucket list.” He visited Hawaii, French Polynesia, including Bora Bora, Tahiti, and his favorite place Moorea, which he always talked about going back to. Dave cruised through the Panama Canal with his sister, Cinda, and his brother-in-law, Rick. He traveled by car with his sister, Christie, and her husband, Fred, to Alaska, to Montana with his sisters, Cinda and Christie, and many road trips with them and his wife, Roxanne. David was a delegate for the ILWU-PMA union that went to Cuba prior to it being opened to visitors. Dave obtained his private pilot’s license and was fortunate to have his own plane, which he flew often. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 21. Dave had a very witty personality, which would appear out of nowhere. He could leave you laughing so hard you’d cry. He was a fun person to be around. Aside from his wittiness, he had a serious side. Dave loved to read, which made him very knowledgeable about many different topics. He had learned many things from his dad, Nelson, and grandfather, Pa. He was well liked, respected, admired, and loved. David worked and played hard. He traveled a lot for his job to support his family, spending days and weeks and months away from home. He traveled from Bellingham, Washington to Long Beach, California for work and every port in between. Dave was a very giving, passionate, and compassionate man, putting others wants and needs before his own. Although Dave wasn’t an outwardly emotional man, he loved his family and close friends unconditionally. Dave is survived by his wife, Roxanne Merryman-Shattuck of Olympia; son, Beau D. Shattuck of Tumwater, Washington; daughters, Kari L. Bakotich of Merritt Island, Florida, and Tamra J. Shattuck-Womack of Aberdeen, Washington; sisters, Cinda Radcliff (Rick) of Olympia, and Christie Schmidt (Fred) of Olympia; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Nelson H. Shattuck; mother, Evelyn P. Shattuck; brothers, Dennis Shattuck and Dale Shattuck. Please leave memories of Dave or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
