Delphine Marie Potier passed away on October 26, 2017. She was born on 30th August, 1924 in Bridgeport, CT. to Albion Mewis and Mable Leroi. What Dell remembered most from childhood was snow and that her parents opened their house to family and others during the Depression. The family came to Tampa when Dell was 16. Her father was a foreman glazier at Tampa Shipyard. Dell attended the Academy of the Holy Names and remembered taking the Bayshore Blvd. trolley to school every morning. Dell was an excellent student but World War II disrupted her plans for college. She took a job at Fort Homer Hesterly Armory. There she met a number of dashing young soldiers who came to train at the brand new MacDill AFB. The man who caught her eye at a USO Club dance was a handsome Cajun named Paul Woodrow Potier. They danced and dated in the whirlwind that was Tampa during the war. They married in 1947 and went to the University of Florida in Gainesville where Woody finished college under the GI Bill. The next decades were a march through jobs, moves, vacations and the birth of five children. They lived on a dairy farm in Delray Beach and then returned to Tampa/Lutz in 1967. Woody was a happy salesman who kept the family laughing. Dell was the steel that kept the family on track. When the children were older she worked as the administrative assistant for Human Resources at Tampa General Hospital and then at the brand new University Community Hospital. Dell was raised in the Catholic Church and lived her faith. As a teenager she helped her mother in the Altar Guild at Sacred Heart Church in Tampa. She was last a member of St. Mary’s Church in Lutz. Dell was predeceased in death by her husband. She is survived by her five children – Ann Hackl (Doug), Laurie Potier-Brown (Rich), Paul Potier (Fleeta), Bruce Potier (Susan) and Mark Potier (Darlene). She has seven grandchildren – David, Stephen (Deborah), Trey, John, Vanessa, Allison and Mallory. She has two great grandchildren – Austin and Kristen. All have been loved, touched and molded by the love that was Delphine Marie (Mewis) Potier. A Celebration Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tampa. Interment will be next to Woodrow at Lutz Cemetery in Lutz, FL immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Joshua House.
