Delta Ann Purkey, age 80 of Gate City, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.  Delta was born on February 13, 1944, in Duffield, VA to Marion and Pearl Purkey.   

Delta dearly loved her family, friends and pets. She devoted her life to helping and serving others in the community and always considered others first. She graduated from Rye Cove High School in 1962 and later received an Associate in Science Degree from Mountain Empire Community College in 1979. She worked for the Appalachian Power Company at the Gate City office for many years. After it closed, she worked her remaining years at the Kingsport office until her retirement. She then dedicated a large part of her life to caring for abandoned and stray animals and was a strong advocate for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats through the Margaret B. Mitchell clinic. 

Delta was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Suella Bowen, Jessie Tucker, and Georgia Hobbs; two brothers-in-law, John Tucker, and Fred Hobbs; and two nephews, Russell Newton, and Kenneth Newton.  Those left to cherish her memory are many loving nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Bill Bowen.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Delta’s life and testimony on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Scott County Funeral Home Weber City with Pastor Brett Tucker officiating.  Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:00 pm.
