Tribute & Tallent Funeral and Cremations
Dewey "Lee" Willyard, Jr.
June 28th, 1943 - January 3rd, 2022
Dewey "Lee" Willyard, Jr., died Monday, January 3, 2022. He was born June 28, 1943, in Charlotte, NC to the late Dewey Lee Willyard, Sr. and Margaret Meacham Willyard. As a young man Lee worked in the auto-racing industry. Most notably, in 1972, he was the youngest engine builder to have three cars finish in the top 10 at the Indianapolis 500. In 1971, Lee married Carlson Blalock. Together, they raised two children while running a successful machine shop specializing in custom machining and prototype work. Over the years, Lees innovative and novel approach to jobs attracted customers from a wide variety of industries including cosmetics, candy makers and textile manufacturing. Later in his career, Lee worked for 10 years as an instructor in the computer-integrated machining program at Central Piedmont Community College, where he helped a number of students on their way to becoming skillful machinists. Throughout his life, Lee acted as a guide and educator to many people whether in business, during his teaching days, or to neighbors and friends. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others. Lee was a colorful storyteller on many topics including the history of the Elizabeth neighborhood where he and Carlson lived for 48 years. Lee is survived by Carlson, his wife of 50 years; son, Patrick Willyard of Wilmington; daughter, Anna Greene (Mike) of Charlotte; granddaughter Everleigh; brother, Ronnie Willyard (Susan) of Charlotte; brother in law, Rennie Blalock (Cynthia) of Maryland: numerous cousins and many wonderful friends. Lee was preceded in death by his faithful canine companion Skeeter. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the physicians and staff at Levine Cancer Institute for the care they provided Lee over the years. The family also wants to convey their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, who assisted Lee and his family in the last days of his life, and made it possible for his death to be dignified and peaceful. A service celebrating Lees life will be held on May 22, 2022, in Charlotte. Please email [email protected] for more information. Donations may be made in Lees honor to the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, online at donatehospice.org or by mail to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, P.O.
