Dolores Winkle, 92-year-old resident of Boise, ID, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Grace Assisted Living with family by her side.
To honor her wishes, there will be no funeral services or public celebration of life.
Dolores was born on March 24, 1932, in Sterling, CO to the late Marquis and Katherine (Wirth) Graves and was raised an only child. She was uprooted frequently as her parents sought out work opportunities across the West from Montana
to Idaho to California. While attending twelve different schools in twelve years was difficult, she developed the ability to make friends and converse with most anyone. After her father died, Dolores and her mother settled in Filer, ID where Dolores finished high school and met the love of her life, Bill Winkle, whom she married in 1952. Her favorite memories from these years included time spent living with Bill’s parents while he was away at Army basic training. She loved her stay at the Winkle farm and shared many fond memories of Mom Winkle teaching her how to cook.
Early married life took Dolores from the Washington DC area, where Bill was stationed during the Korean War, to locations in Northern Idaho, Southern Idaho, and Northern California for Bill’s work before they finally settled in Boise, ID to raise their family. Over the years Dolores held many different jobs, which included babysitting and working at the drug store as a teenager, working at Twin Falls Bank and Trust and
Commercial Credit Corporation in Twin Falls after high school, and working at Commercial Credit Corporation and Trans World Airlines in Washington, DC. But after settling back in Boise, Dolores found her place at Pierce Park Elementary School
and Hawthorne Elementary School where she worked for the Boise School District for 23 years. After both she and Bill retired, they moved to McCall, ID and split their time between McCall and Palm Desert, CA where she made many great friends and memories.
Over the years, golf became one of Dolores’ favorite past times and she became
known for her clutch putting skills. She also loved to knit and blessed her family with many creations. She always looked forward to traveling and frequently shared the stories of her and Bill’s travel escapades. In later years as her eyesight deteriorated, she enjoyed Wii bowling, trivia and cornhole at Grace Assisted Living.
Dolores is survived by her daughter, Susan Tweedy (Dennis) of Caldwell, ID, and sons Stewart Winkle (Jill) and Jim Winkle (Michele) of Boise, ID. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Anne Sziebert (Frank), Will Winkle, Kate Misura and Reena Misura and her great- granddaughter, Beatrice Sziebert.
Dolores was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Bill Winkle; granddaughter, Alyssa Misura; parents, Marquis Graves and Katherine Graves Hurd; half-brother, Clayton Graves; and stepbrother, Dean Hurd.
