Donald Joseph Phelan
January 4th, 1934 - October 10th, 2017
Obituary PHELAN, DONALD JOSEPH January 4, 1934 ~ October 10, 2017 Don Phelan was born January 4, 1934 in Denver, Colorado; one of five children of Grattan and Willa Phelan. His father's banking career with small businesses inspired Don to own his own business one day. He served in the army near the end of the Korean War, touring Europe on the boxing team. July 13, 1957, Don married Annette (Sue) Stupca and moved to Colorado Springs to take a position with Hewlett Packard where he later retired in 1989. Don and Sue purchased Sunset Greenhouse in 1977 and opened Phelan Gardens in 1981, firmly planting his family in the 'Green Industry'. For 10 years he served with Service Corp of Retired Executives as a business counselor, Chapter Chairman, and Regional Director. He served on the national level as Vice President and Chairman of the Board for SCORE. He worked with the CDC (Citizen Democracy Corp) advising Russian businesses and university classes in Siberia for six weeks. He authored the book Success, Happiness, Independence, Own Your Own Business. Don and Sue were residents of Black Forest for 33 years and have made Pueblo West their home the last 12 years. He's remembered for his quick, dry sense of humor! He shared compassionate insight, a love of arts/nature, and a deep dedication to his family. Don is survived by his wife, Sue Phelan of 60 years; son, Mark and Sheri Phelan of Colorado Springs, and their children, Sean and Emily; son, Phil and Lori Phelan of Fort Collins, and their children, Erin, Thomas, Kelly, and Jennifer; daughter Monica Phelan of Colorado Springs, and her children, Kyle and Shannon; daughter, Valerie and Ed Belding of Woodland Park, and their children, Casey and Tyler; brother Tom Phelan of Fort Collins; and brother, Gerry Phelan of Denver. A funeral service will be held October 19 at 11:00 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Pueblo West. In lieu of flowers, contribute to a charity of your choice. Services Funeral Service
