Donald M. Robertson

Colonel Donald Murray Robertson, 84 of Satellite Beach, FL began his final journey from this life on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Holmes Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Don, also known as Robby, Garibaldi, and the Candy Man was born March 7, 1930 in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was the son of the late Edgar Silas and Esther Gustafson Robertson. Don was a graduate of Worcester Prep School and Norwich University. Upon graduation he received his commission in the US Army and reported for duty to Ft. Knox, KY. Don is survived by his wife, Myra Sue Thompson Robertson; his children, Steven ""Bones"" Robertson of Annandale, VA; Catherine Robertson of Dallas, TX; Aaron Crace and Ashley Crace (Matt Glockner); both of Lexington, KY; his sister Barbara Loney McGee of Ft. Meyers, FL; his Goddaughter, Dr. Christina Ching, Nashville, TN; along with many wonderful friends and extended family. Don's first wife, Mary Mamrosh Robertson died in 1987. Don served in both the Korean Conflict and Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was a tank commander and his unit was instrumental in winning the battle at Pork Chop Hill in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze campaign stars, the United Nation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, an Overseas Service Bar and the one of which he was most prouda�""the Combat Infantry Badge. Don's civilian career was with the Internal Revenue Service as a computer programmer. He was proud to be part of an early programming class with the IRS. As part of his incredible life, he designed shoes for Daniel Green Shoes, worked in his Dad's heel factory, worked in Blatz Brewery, drove a taxi in Washington DC (just to say he'd done it), and spent 2 ½ years with the Agency for International Development serving in Honduras. Don was a very active person traveling to six continents and over 50 countries. He had flown airplanes, parachuted, bungeed, zip lined, hot air ballooned, climbed Diamond Head and Ayres Rock, and been on Safari. He was always looking for his next adventure. Don volunteered for several organizations including Virginia Special Olympics, the Scottish Games, the President's Cup golf tournament, the King Center, Ashland Schools, and others. He also donated platelets and stem cells for over six years. Don was a 32nd degree mason with 57 years of membership in Brattleboro Lodge No. 102; BPO Elks; Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #37; VFW Life Member, Post 8191; Life Member The American Legion Post #200; member of the Old Guard at Norwich University; a Kentucky Colonel and, a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 5:00pm at Little Dos Amigos Cantina, 1246 Highway A1A in Satellite Beach.
