Donald C. Schnackel

Donald C. Schnackel,73, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on October 2, 2023. Don was born on October 4, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio to parents Jack and Kay Schnackel. Shortly after his birth, Don’s family moved to Connecticut where he attended Rectory and Salisbury boarding schools. In school Don flourished in athletics: a standout on the offensive and defensive line, a state qualifier in wrestling, and steadfast rower on the crew team. But it was on holidays and summer breaks that Don fell in love with the water; sailing, boating, skiing, and then working in the marinas near the house. Don moved back to Ohio for college where he graduated from Bowling Green State University and began his 45-year career in business. Always learning and observing, patiently listening, and working tirelessly during his career, Don’s work ethic was legendary. Across every position and sector, including as he operated his own metal and iron processing yards, he turned on the lights and was the last one to leave every day. Even in retirement he wouldn’t slow down. Whether he was volunteering to build houses or repair offices, taking friends and family out on the boat, or teeing off for a round of golf just as the sun was appearing over the Atlantic Ocean, every day had purpose and tasks to accomplish. Despite all his personal and professional success though, he was the first to show up and help, he stayed until the job was done or your problem was solved, and the last to take any credit for the successful day. His rare blend of strength, discipline, humor, and wisdom was unmatched and will be deeply missed. Don is survived by his wife Jeanne Marie; children Loren, Rachel, William; 7 grandchildren, and a sister Katherine. He is predeceased by his first wife Acelia, parents, and siblings Jay, Mary Lou, and Robert. A private memorial for the family will be held at sea.
