Donald Walker Shuman Mr. Shuman, 95, of Charlotte, NC died November 23, 2010 at his home. A Charlotte native, he was born January 29, 1915 to Jessie Mae Hart Shuman and Charles Franklin Shuman. Mr. Shuman attended Charlotte City Schools, graduating from Old Central High School in the class of 1933. He attended Geyer Business College and was associated with Henry V. Dick Company in Charlotte and Raleigh, NC. Mr. Shuman served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Mr. Shuman returned to Charlotte in 1943 and went into business with his father and brother in Shuman Roofing and Heating Company which later became The Shuman Company. He retired from the company in 1981. Mr. Shuman has been an active member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church since 1943, serving as a Deacon, Chairman of the Diaconate, and for many years on the Building and Grounds Committee. Much of his free time was given in volunteer work for the church and Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Shuman was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Cornwell Shuman and Jack Northey Shuman. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Barkalow Shuman; two sons, Don Walker Shuman Jr. and his wife, Margaret of Asheville, NC and James Franklin Shuman Sr. and his wife Louise of Mt. Gilead, NC; four grandchildren, Angela S. McIntosh of Mint Hill, NC, Elizabeth R. Shuman of Fairview, NC, James F. Shuman, Jr. and his wife, Annemarie of Charlotte, and Thomas R. Shuman of Denver, Colorado; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald Walker Shuman will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Rush Otey officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
