Donald (Don) E. Yount March 7, 1931 " June 6, 2008 Age: 77 Residence: Greeley, Colorado Tribute: Donald (Don) Eugene Yount was born in Modock, Kansas to Roy and Minnie (Haury) Yount. Much of Don’s childhood was spent in or near Garden City, Kansas. He left school early to work in the oil fields for several years and in 1950 joined the U.S. Navy at age nineteen. On August 3, 1952 he married his Garden City Sweetheart, Vi Bullard. They looked forward to celebrating 57 fulfilling and never dull years together. The last 45 years they lived in Greeley, where both attended UNC and joyfully assisted in the growth and development of their extended family. Don’s military service was during the Korean conflict where he saw action, and also in the Sea of China and the South Pacific. His last year of active duty was spent in a hospital in San Diego. He was discharged from active duty in 1954 and the Navy Reserves in 1960. As a civilian, he especially enjoyed working for several years in various criminal justice positions. Prior to retiring, due to poor health, he was a building contractor specializing in mountain homes on challenging building sites. Don developed a love for horses while a teenage ranch hand in western Colorado. He frequented the mountains for camping, hunting and fishing, often by horseback or trail bike. Later, when severely health constrained, he and his brother, John (Dubber), who is wheelchair restricted due to paralysis, redesigned an amphibious six-wheel boat for their high country fishing. Loving to interact with people, Don worked with local support groups giving motivational talks to fellow sufferers of emphysema and lung cancer. He personified the Apostle Paul’s example to the Philippians, "I know both how to have a little and I know how to have a lot. I have learned how to be content in whatever my circumstances.” Mr. Yount died Friday, June 6, 2008 at North Colorado Medical Center Hospice and Palliative care in Greeley, Colorado.
