Donnie Isiah Smith, age 83 of Kannapolis, NC formerly of Charlotte, NC and Rockingham, NC passed away on Friday December 22, 2017 after an extended illness. He was the beloved son of the late Lacy William Smith and Annie Prudence Buckles Smith. Donnie was born and raised in Rockingham, NC where he attended Richmond County High School. He was a Meat Cutter for A& P food markets for over 30 years, and later worked at Pine Island Country Club in their Pro Shop. He and his wife were former members of Bethel Baptist Church of Charlotte, NC for years. Donnie was a member of Westgate Masonic Lodge #738 for over 40 years. He enjoyed baseball and golf and hunting. Donnie is survived by his son Roger Dale Smith and his wife Leslie of Concord, NC; and 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his late parent, Donnie is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Betty Jean Turner Smith, and his son William Dean Smith, and Grandson Roger Dale Smith Jr., his brother Jack Lacy Smith; and sisters Vivian Patterson, Blondie Smith, Bobbie Nuttall, Jean O'Neil Funeral services for Donnie will be held at 1:00PM on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203, with visitation from 12NOON to 1:00PM in the chapel at Hankins and Whittington. Interment will follow immediately at Forest Lawn West Cemetery on Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC. Contributions in Donnie's memory may be made to and local chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
