Doris Briggs
July 29th, 1927 - December 3rd, 2012
Doris Virginia Briggs of Salinas was born July 29th, 1927, to John and Thelma Schmid in Johnstown, PA. Doris studied nursing at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was an RN in New Orleans and moved to Berkeley to study engineering at UCB. When she was a nurse at Alta Bates Hospital, she met Richard Briggs. They married in 1950 and started their family in San Diego. With four children, the family resided in Salinas since 1961, where Doris resumed her career at the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, retiring after more than 25 years. Doris at age 85 passed away peacefully on December 3, 2012. She is survived by two siblings, Ardelle Ulerich and John Schmid II; her children, Linda Crotty, Suzanne Wood, Karen Hall, and Richard Briggs, Jr., eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Her loving, patient goodness will be sorely missed by family and friends, but she will always be remembered for her support and guidance in life’s countless joys. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 1-7pm at Healey Mortuary 405 N. Sanborn Rd. Salinas, CA 93905. An Internment at Garden of Memories will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 and a Celebration of Life Service will follow at First United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. 404 Lincoln Ave. Salinas, CA 93901. Donations may be made in remembrance to Madonna Manor, 1335 Byron Dr, Salinas, CA 93901.

Healey hoped to find a way to continue to meaningfully help his county and community grow. He and his wife founded Salinas Valley Mortuary in 1956 to help serve the families in the Salinas Valley area. Their lifelong mission was to unselfishly serve area families based on their strong, trusting relationship with their community – something we honor to this day almost seven decades years later....
