Doris Mary Votry
January 22nd, 1926 - April 30th, 2013
Doris Mary Votry, 87, of Harrower Lane, Amsterdam, went to be with the Lord and her beloved father, mother, brother and many relatives and friends who predeceased her. She died at home on April 30, 2013 after a long illness. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hagaman. Doris was a loving and generous soul sharing her earthly goods with many others. Doris was born on January 22, 1926, the daughter of William D. and Irene Ross Whitbeck Haithwaite. She was a graduate of grammar school in Hagaman and later the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam class of 1944. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from New York State College for Teachers in Albany, NY, now SUNY. During her early days she was a tap dancer and at the age of 12 appeared on the first televised variety show put on by GE and WGY. Her father was proprietor of the former Red and White store on Lindsay St. for many years in Amsterdam. On June 15, 1948, the day after she received her M.A., she married Edmund N. Votry of Cohoes, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a student at Cornell University. During her career she taught school at Newfield, NY Central School and later worked for Cornell University until her husbands graduation in 1951. Doris and Ned lived in New Jersey for eight years, Doris working for Thomas A. Edison Co. and Ned for Prudential. During this period their daughter Susan was born in 1953. They moved to the Boston area in 1959 and Doris was employed by the William Carter Cp. In Needham Heights from which she retired. Following Ned's retirement from Prudential in 1984, the couple moved to Laconia, NH where they had a summer cottage on Lake Winnepesaukee, and to Amsterdam where they lived the rest of their life. Doris was predeceased by her beloved brother, David Haithwaite, who passed away in 2003. In addition to her husband of64 years, Doris is survived by her beloved family which includes her daughter Susan and her husband Kenneth Votry-Kundich, her granddaughters, Katherine and Karrie Anne Votry-Kundich all of Wisconsin. She is also survived by her cousins, Norman McGrattan of Albany, NY, Joan Miner of New Hartford, Elmer Trull and Barbara Del Hannasch of Texas and by her extended family, the Brassfields of Kentucky, and American Indians, the Broken Ropes of South Dakota and the Youngs of North Dakota. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:00A.M. at the Hagaman Mills Cemetery, Hagaman, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam.
