Dorothy Mildred Bergman

April 2nd, 1928 - December 17th, 2018

Dorothy Mildred Bergman passed away peacefully in Portland, Oregon on December 17th, 2018 at the age of 90. She was the youngest of three children born on April 2nd, 1928 in Regina, Saskatchenwan, Canada to Harry and Bertha Parker. In 1933, the Parker family moved to Southy, Saskatchewan where her father bought an auto repair shop. Dorothy fondly remembered being allowed to spend summers with the large Laatsch’s family on their farm. Working alongside Mrs Nellie Laatsch and her daughter & friend Hilma, they were a support to the farm workers for 8 years. In 1941, WWII was in full swing and the depression had wiped out the business at her father’s auto repair shop. He headed east in search of employment. The family never saw him again. The rest of the family returned to Regina where the mother found work. After her years at Regina Central Collegiate Institute, Dorothy started nurses training at Regina General Hospital graduating with the class of 1950. Eager to move away from the Prairie, she and her classmate, Lordy, headed west, their goal: Hawaii. They got as far as Salem, Oregon where they worked at the State Hospital. She met her husband Morris, "Mo" at a young adult’s social group. They married in 1952 and started their family, remaining in Salem for sixty years. She enjoyed volunteering in the children’s school, was a dedicated Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls leader, beautiful seamstress and an excellent cook. Annual family road trips exploring western Canada and the western states were always an enjoyable adventure. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii and in later years, they enjoyed extensive international traveling. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, “Mo” (2016); son Christopher (1976); sister Grace Gergley of Regina (2013) and brother Herb of Regina (2000). She is survived by daughter Nancy Bergman of Portland. A memorial will be held Saturday, January 19th 11:30 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church 1770 Baxter Rd SE Salem in Baxter Hall. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cascade Pacific (Portland) or Oregon Trail (Eugene) Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
