Dorothy Rae Redhair) Coats
June 21st, 1925 - January 22nd, 2022
Dorothy Rae (Redhair) Coats, 96, died peacefully on January 22, 2022, with family at her side. Dorothy Rae Redhair was born June 21, 1925, in Sacramento, California, to Raymond Peter Redhair and Rosemary Ballard Redhair. She was raised on her parents' farm in Tierra Buena, and loved to visit the nearby Sutter Buttes, where her grandparents had established an almond orchard that she eventually inherited. On December 2, 1946, she married Wallace James Coats at Walnut Grove. School and work led them from Yuba City to Oakland, and San Leandro, and eventually to Sacramento. Besides being a homemaker, Dorothy worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. A lifelong Democrat and active in civic affairs, she was a member of Sacramento Lawyers' Wives, Tuesday Club, and Kingsley Art Club. She was a docent for Crocker Art Museum, sharing the arts with children. She enjoyed golf, bridge, and dominoes, playing the latter two well into her 90s, was an excellent cook and seamstress, and loved picnicking and car camping. A's and Giants baseball games were a favorite, whether broadcast or seen in person. She loved life, and loved the people in her life. Wallace passed away in 2000, and Dorothy found companionship in his widowed brother Robert, a lifelong friend. Wed in 2002, they moved to his ranch near Yuba City, summering at Lake Almanor. Their marriage was happy but brief. Robert passed in 2007, and Dorothy moved to a smaller home, which she filled with art and frequent visitors. She was preceded in death by infant brother, Gregory; both parents; husbands, Wallace Coats, and Robert Coats; daughter, Laura Jane Coats; son-in-law, Paul Kashuba; and grandchildren, Bernard Heian, Molly Ward, and Danielle Rangell. She is survived by daughters, Barbara Ward (Gordon), and Mary Kashuba; and son, Jim Coats; step-children, Betty Heian, Robin Walther (Jim), Robert Coats, Jr. (Shari), Frank Coats (Channon), and Tom Coats (Renate); 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and a large circle of friends and extended family. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Sutter Cemetery, with reception after at The Meadows Clubhouse, 1338 Hunn Road, Yuba City. The family are grateful for the kindness and care of Dr. Narinder Basra and home care provider Elizabeth Pineda, and all at Rideout Hospital who helped keep Dorothy comfortable, especially in her final days. Donations to the Sutter County Museum, Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust, or Kingsley Art Club are welcome.
