Dorothy Rita Flanagan

July 19th, 1939 - May 21st, 2024

Dorothy Rita Flanagan (1939 - 2024)

Dorothy Rita Flanagan, a pillar of strength and love, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024, at the age of 84.

Born in Bardstown, Kentucky on July 19, 1939, Rita grew up on a farm, instilling in her a strong work ethic and a nurturing spirit. She helped raise her nine siblings alongside her responsibilities on the farm. After welcoming her fifth child Robbie (who was born with cerebral palsy), Rita embarked on a new chapter, moving her family to Tucson, Arizona, seeking better opportunities for her family.

In Tucson, Rita’s resilience shone brightly. She carved a successful path in the business world, a testament to her determination and grit. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rita found support and lifelong friendship with the parents of children with Cerebral Palsy. Her faith was central to her life, and she actively participated in her Catholic community.

Rita leaves behind a legacy of love. She is preceded in death by her parents, Anna Lena and Curtis Leslie Durbin. She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert; children, Robin Akins (Doug), Leslie Engelhard (Rich), Irma “Mike,” Mary (Imran), Robbie, and Patrick Flanagan; grandchildren, Jon, Sarah, Caitlin, Michael, Ben, Chris, William, Megan, Alex, Steven, Avery, Brody, Corinne; and great-grandchildren, Rory, Eddie, Kate, Corbin, and another great grand daughter on the way . She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings and extended family and friends.

Rita was a force of nature – generous and strong-willed. She touched countless lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Whether as a mother, sister, wife, aunt, grandmother, or friend, Rita leaves an indelible mark on our hearts. Her memory and spirit live on.

Rita brightened up the room with her smile and good nature. I have so many lovely memories spending time with her, Bob, Curt, Sandy, and my parents, Leo and Mary Jean. My heart was so touched by the love she had for everyone she met. She will be greatly missed. I hope her family and friends find comfort in knowing how she impacted so many lives.

The Egyptians say that you die twice, once when your soul leaves your body, and the second when people stop saying your name. Share those stories, memories, and love. Keep her alive through all of you. My heart is with everyone during this difficult time.
