Dorothy Lee Gentry

GENTRY, Dorothy Lee (Moore) Dorothy Lee Gentry, 87, passed into eternal life on Friday, May 4, 2018 after a valiant fight against cancer and other illnesses. She was a native of Lexington and a descendant of some of the earliest settlers of the area. She was the only child of Dorothy Katherine Skeen and Horace Lee Moore. She lived nearly all of her life in Lexington, except for a brief stint in Florida in the 1980s. She returned to her hometown to care for her elderly parents and remained in Lexington since then. She is free now to re-join them. She was a lifelong member of Victory Christian Church, an institution where her family members played a significant role in its founding and construction. She was educated at Sayre School, graduating two years early as the co-valedictorian of her class. She was raised in the Kenwick area of Lexington where she met and married the love of her life, the late Carl E. Gentry. They produced three children who survive her: Vicki Gentry Maxey, of Lexington; Mark E. Gentry, of Tampa, FL; and Sharon G. Perzel (William), of Marietta, GA. She was known lovingly as "Granny Kat" by her six grandchildren, Jerry J. Maxey (Kimberly), Mary L. Maxey, Amanda K. Perzel, Emily M. Baker (Brian), Todd W. Perzel (Nancy), Evan L. Perzel. Her eleven great grandchildren, Donnie, Kody, Skyler, Cheyenne, Cassie, Zach, Harley, Camron, Breaunna, Eleanor and William, also knew her as "G.G.". In addition to the above mentioned, she is also survived by an aunt (Francis Moore Floyd of Canon, Georgia), and multiple cousins in Kentucky, Georgia, and across the globe. She was a die-hard, blue-bleeding, University of Kentucky Wildcat fan, tirelessly attending basketball and football games for over forty years, until recently when she became too weak to do so. She was a former employee of the UK Athletic Department (ticket office) during the tenures of Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, and multiple football coaches, and was a proud member of the Big Blue Nation, displaying her allegiance by her clothing wherever she traveled. During her brief stint in Florida, she became a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Holly Hill where she served as President of that organization during some of that time. She returned to visit the group on numerous occasions and attended several national conventions of the organization as a Past President, even after returning to Lexington. She recently celebrated completion of 30 years as a member. In her life with Carl, she served in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lexington Fire Department, tirelessly serving warm coffee and refreshments to fire fighters involved in fighting many of Lexington's fires. She also served as president of that organization. She was extremely proud of her time with that group. The Big Blue Nation will now have another member to root them on from heaven! Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. followed by a service at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing, Nicholasville, Kentucky.
