Dorothy Elizabeth Holmes Oakes, age 89, of Las Vegas, NV died Saturday, August 14, 2010. Dorothy was born February 17, 1921 in New Jersey to the late Walter C. Holmes and Florence S. Holmes. She grew up in Woodbury, NJ and attended Penn State University, where she met and soon married Russell Curtis Oakes. They raised 6 children and were together for 56 years. At age 50 Dorothy returned to the university and earned her Bachelor's degree in visual arts and became a talented painter. Throughout her life she was an avid flower gardener and crafts person. Dorothy is survived by her children Margaret Oakes of Las Vegas, Barbara Oakes of New York City, James (Denise) Oakes of Spencerport, NY, Nancy Oakes (Rick Cannon) of Woodbury, VT, John (Danette) Oakes of Medina, NY; grandchildren Jesse Cannon, Sarah Cannon, Laura Cannon, Anna Oakes, Elizabeth Oakes; and her sister, Barbara Price. She is predeceased by her husband Russell Curtis Oakes, daughter, Shirley Reynolds, and brother Robert Holmes. Donations in Dorothy's memory may be made for dementia respite grants to the Area Agency on Aging for Northeastern Vermont, 481 Summer Street, Suite 101, St Johnsbury, Vermont 05819, or your local Alzheimer's Association. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas, 3616 E. Lake Mead Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89115 on Tuesday, August 17th at 3 PM.
