August 28th, 1926 - December 19th, 2014
Dorothy "Dot" Allan Smith, age 88, of Gloversville passed away peacefully on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Nathan Littauer Hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1926 in Rockford, Ill; the daughter of the late James B. and Marjorie McDonald Allan and stepdaughter of Greta Gibson Allan. Dorothy moved to Edinbourough, Scotland at a very young age where she was raised and educated. This is where she met the love of her life Arnold J. Smith who was stationed in England as a U.S. Air force B-17 pilot. She and Arnold moved back to the States after the war and were married on June 26, 1948. They resided in Gloversville where she worked as a secretary at the former Schine Enterprises. After the birth of her son Richard she became a stay at home wife and mother. After her first cooking attempt which included boiling hamburger she became very accomplished in the kitchen and was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved animals, boating on the Great Sacandaga Lake and made many trips to the Oak Mtn. and Silver Bells ski centers to downhill ski with family and friends. She became an accomplished oil paint artist and left behind many wonderful paintings. She enjoyed playing bridge with the girls and she traveled all around the world with Arnold. Her favorite destination was the island of Aruba where she spent several months each year and was joined there by family and friends frequently. She and Arnold loved frequenting local restaurants especially Harold's where she will be missed. She was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church, the Gloversville YWCA, member and past President of the Getman Home Board of Managers was a member and past Officer of the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary. Dot had a great sense of humor and always had a smile ready for anyone willing to share it. She is pre deceased by her husband Arnold and her brother Wayne Allan. Dot is survived by her son Richard; grandson Matthew; granddaughter Ella; daughter in law Tonia; sister in law Jean Allen and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all those who knew her. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 to 1:00 Monday, December 22nd at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. A private graveside burial will take place in Spring 2015. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the North Main St. United Methodist Church, 316 N. Main St; Gloversville or Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, 99 E. State St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
