Douglas Kawila Chan

Douglas Kawila Chan, born September 20th, 1941, passed away on August 21st, 2024 at the age of 82.

Douglas was born in Honolulu Hawaii to parents Libert and Hazel Chan. He was the youngest of seven siblings.

After graduating from McKinley High School in 1959, Doug studied at Willamette University. He excelled as a halfback and cornerback on the Bearcat football team, earning all-conference mention for his efforts during the 1961 season. While attending university, Doug worked at Oregon State Hospital in Salem as an orderly. It was there that he met Joan Mancini, who was busy with her nursing residency. They married in January of 1963. Though Joan passed in 2019, the two were able to celebrate 56 years of marriage.

After completing spring semester at Willamette in 1963, Doug’s marriage and brand-new baby boy led Doug to complete his undergraduate work and teaching requirements at Portland State University. He soon found himself teaching at Marshall High School in Portland. He quickly settled at Rex Putnam High School, kickstarting a 30 plus year career teaching health and coaching football, girls’ golf, and girls’ basketball.

Doug operated his own landscaping business, aptly named House Of Chan, for many years while he was teaching and for several more years after his retirement from Putnam in 1999.

After retirement, Doug spent most of his time on the golf course with friends or with Joan, working on his immaculate yard, or at a grandchild's sporting event, clapping, cheering, and yelling at the refs, despite his brief foray into basketball officiating in the 2000’s.

Doug is survived by his brother Richard Chan; his children-Greg Chan and wife Michelle, Alicia Maluafiti, and Debra Anderegg and husband Roger Castro; his grandchildren-Chantel Chan, Alexandra Anderegg, Kyle Anderegg, Malia Chan, and Makaila Chan; and his great grandchildren-Ge'Aulani and Gladys.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Junior (Libert) Chan, Alfred Chan, Edward Chan, Melvin Chan and sister Nona Freitas.

Doug was an incredibly beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was also a friend and mentor to many and a respected teacher and coach to literally thousands of students. He will be dearly missed by all who had the fortune of knowing him.
