"It's these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane." These words from Jimmy Buffett perfectly describe how Doug lived his life. Doug passed away on March 1, 2012 surrounded by the family he loved, after battling cancer fiercely for over 3 years. Doug made his way into the world on February 1, 1958 in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Aurora Central High School, where he excelled in many sports including football and track. He enjoyed the competitive aspect of sports, and continued his career at Oregon State University, where he played football, rugby, and rowed crew. Doug never met a sport he didn't like, and continued his involvement in sports through his adult life by playing softball, basketball, and volleyball. He was also an avid runner, completing many races including the Denver Marathon and the Pikes Peak Half Marathon. Throughout his life, Doug was an excellent skier, and although trips up to the mountains were difficult in the last few years, he still managed to sneak up a couple times. After transferring to the University of Northern Colorado, Doug (finally) earned a BBA in Finance in 1983. Following a short stint at Dun & Bradstreet, he landed a position at Lockheed Martin in finance. He held many positions at Lockheed over the years, and was still employed there at the time of his death. Doug met his future wife, Gillian Parks (Gilly), in 1984 when close childhood friends introduced them to each other. They were married on August 29, 1987 in Denver. Soon after, Doug accepted a temporary assignment in Langenargen, Germany, where they spent several months traveling, drinking beer, and getting a little work done. It was here that Doug began to appreciate his German heritage and also led to his passion for brewing his own beer, especially his beloved porter. Their family grew in 1989 with the birth of their first daughter, Tessa Catherine, and became complete in 1992 with the birth of Carly Victoria. Luckily his girls were as athletic as he was. He spent countless hours coaching, watching, and providing encouragement. Time with his family was the most important thing to Doug. When they could get a break from their hectic schedules, they escaped to some far away beach. Doug passed along his affection for scuba diving to his daughter Tessa. He knew he would always have a permanent dive buddy in her. Their island vacations inspired his preferred method of dress: the Hawaiian shirt. Although Doug was in the middle of his fight against cancer, the family managed to take a final trip to Hawaii. It was one that none of them will ever forget. Doug leaves behind Gilly, Tessa, Carly and his loyal dog and companion, Avalanche. He is also survived by his parents Arden and Carolyn Hartman, brother David Hartman and his wife Liz, and their children Katie, Megan, Brian, and Ellie. Doug is additionally survived by his brother Dan Hartman and his wife Chrissie, and their children Haley and Hunter, as well as his sister Cathy Hartman. Doug was very much a part of Gilly's family and will be deeply missed by his in-laws Jim and Janet Parks, Randy and Kathy Parks and their son Casey, and Polly Parks. Doug also leaves behind a wealth of friends and extended family, which he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his dog Elvis, with whom he shared a similar disposition. Memorial gifts can be made to the Doug Hartman Scholarship Fund at Chaparral High School, which will help multi-sport athletes in need afford to participate. Please send donations to Chaparral Athletic Department, attn. Cheri Whipple, 15655 Brookstone Dr., Parker, CO 80134. Please denote The Doug Hartman Scholarship Fund. The family would like to also encourage those who loved Doug to register to donate bone marrow through Be The Match National Marrow Donor Program. More information can be found at www.marrow.org. Also, they want to encourage people to donate blood and platelets as often as possible through Bonfils Blood Center. A Life Celebration will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 2:00 p.m. at Villa Parker, 10750 S. Pine Drive, Parker, CO 80138. We would like to honor Doug by wearing a Hawaiian shirt or island wear to the celebration. Service Information
