Douglas Mahlon Stanley

October 19th, 1949 - March 1st, 2024

Douglas Mahlon Stanley, 74, of Canby, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on February 29, 2024.

Doug was born on October 19, 1949, in Yakima Washington, the son of Waldon (Dub) and Ethel Stanley. Doug grew up and attended school in Yakima where he graduated from A.C. Davis High School, class of 1967. In September of 1967 Doug enlisted in the Army, where he served proudly as a field radio mechanic for the next few years. Shortly after returning to the Yakima valley, Douglas met Joyce Mae Unser. Following a brief courtship, they married in October 1971. After their honeymoon, the couple continued to live in the Yakima valley until they decided to relocate to the Portland, Oregon area in February 1974. Doug ultimately was offered a position with Tektronix Corporation in Beaverton, Oregon. It quickly became apparent that he was thriving amongst his peers. Doug joined the Color Printer and Imaging Division in the early 1980’s where he became a pioneer in phase-change solid-ink technology, eventually receiving the honors of being awarded seven United States patents for his ground-breaking work.

Doug remained with Tektronix (Xerox) until his retirement in 2012. During his retirement years, he found joy in his numerous hobbies that included electronic tinkering, weekly coffee club, designing and building custom tube amplifiers, family travel, and European cruise vacations. Doug focused much of his free time on doing what he loved the most: repairing and restoration of classic cars. His pride and joy was his 1937 Ford Coupe. The car had been extra special to Doug: originally, he helped his good friend Lynn Pfaff build the car during their high school years. Many years later, Doug was given the opportunity to reconnect with the 37 Ford. He completely restored this car to trophy winning status. When not working on his own cars, Doug could often be found in his garage helping many friends and neighbors.

He and his wife Joyce had an active role with the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank where Doug volunteered as their treasurer until his passing. After his wife’s passing in 2018, it was clear from the outpour of support that Doug touched the hearts and lives of so many people. During this period Doug met Priscilla Wu, who grew to be a very important part of his life as a good friend and confidant that brought Doug back out of his shell. He was a wonderful son, brother, father, friend, grandfather, neighbor, and caring husband to his wife Joyce of 47 years.

He loved his friends and family unconditionally. Doug will always be remembered for his outgoing and friendly personality, his infectious laugh, and his willingness to help those around him, never expecting anything in return. He was truly a wonderful, warm, and good-hearted man that genuinely cared for those around him.

Douglas is preceded by his wife Joyce Mae Stanley (2018). He is survived by two sons: Aaron (Jody) Stanley of Wilsonville, Oregon; and Lynn (Sandra) Stanley of Nunn, Colorado.

Doug also leaves behind three brothers: Jerry (Karen) Stanley of Hillsboro, Oregon; Don Stanley of Jefferson, Oregon; and Mike (Jeannia) Stanley of Yakima, Washington. Also surviving Doug are his mother-in-law Marion Unser of Yakima, Washington, and two sisters-in-laws: Jolene (Jim) Tobin of Yakima, Washington; and Diane (Dave) Camerer of Yakima, Washington. Douglas leaves behind six loving grandchildren: Nikolai Stanley, Darian Stanley, Anna Stanley, Dylan Stanley, Zachary Martinez and Emma Stanley.
