Dr. Mitchell LeVine
September 22nd, 1951 - May 3rd, 2020
MITCHELL LEE LeVINE, M.D., 68, of St. Petersburg, died May 3. Born in Chicago on September 22, 1951, he moved to St. Petersburg as a child when his father, the late Morris Joseph LeVine, M.D., opened a local general surgery practice in 1958. Dr. Morris and Marilyn Fisher LeVine raised Mitchell and his three younger siblings in St. Petersburg, where they were and are longtime members of Congregation B’nai Israel. Mitch was a graduate of Boca Ciega High School, Emory University and the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. After completing a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he returned to town, joining his father and brother Steven in forming LeVine Surgical Associates, P.A. Mitch practiced colorectal surgery in St. Petersburg for nearly 25 years at almost all local hospitals. He was also a popular, award-winning local entertainer, renowned as much for his own glorious laughter as he was for the laughter he brought to others. He was a true Renaissance man; scientist, healer, actor, second tenor, filmmaker, parody lyricist, pianist, clarinetist, painter, sketch artist, historian, genealogist, traveler, explorer, sports fan, collector, voracious reader and all-around cultural omnivore. He loved so many things that it’s easier to name the few things he did not like: spiders, Scooby Doo, My Little Pony, the Smurfs, James Taylor, Woody Allen, Aristotle (who is "always wrong"), okra as food and water as beverage. What Mitch loved by far the most was also his greatest achievement: his amazing, enormous family. Survivors include his beloved wife of 41 years, Ellie; six children Stacy LeVine, Robyn Kane (Eric), Scott LeVine, Esq. (Rebecca), Andrea LeVine (Eric), Matthew LeVine, Ph.D. (Drea) and Leslie Weingarten (Sam); four grandchildren, with one on the way; mother Marilyn LeVine, and; younger siblings Steven LeVine, M.D. (Susan), Sharon Rosenthal (Dave) and David LeVine M.D. (Janice). The family suggests memorials to Menorah Manor or Congregation B’nai Israel. The funeral service and interment will take place on Tuesday, May 5 at 3:00 pm Graveside interment will be limited to immediate family. All are welcome to attend the funeral service via Zoom.
