Sheldon Hobert Barnes, MD March 27, 1930 – June 20, 2023 Born in Sidney, NY, he passed away peacefully on June 20, at age 93. Sheldon joins his beloved wife of 68 years, Lucille (deceased 2017). He is survived by his four children; Linda (Gene) Elkins, Chuck (Vicki) Barnes, Maggie (Larry) Smith, Laurie Barnes (fiancé Dave). He is survived by a sister, Joyce (Ed) Pearthree. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Christopher, Andrew, Elaine, Steven, Amy, Michael, Matthew, Erika, and David; and 13 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents Hobert and Vivia Barnes, and sisters Myrtle, Marjorie, Jean, and Shirley. Sheldon was a 1952 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduate, and served in the United States Navy as Lt. Commander and physician from 1956-1965 during the Vietnam era. He graduated from the School of Medicine, Syracuse University in 1956. After completing an internship and residency at Portsmouth, VA Naval Hospital, he was transferred to Jacksonville, FL Naval Hospital where he served as emergency room physician and as nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare defense officer. In 1964, he was transferred back to Portsmouth Naval Hospital to serve as Assistant Chief, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After retiring from military service, he relocated to Miami Springs, FL and went into private practice as an OB/GYN from 1965-1986. He worked primarily with Hialeah Hospital, where he also served as chief of staff, and professor at the medical school from 1965-1986. Dr. Barnes retired from his practice in 1986, relocated to Melbourne, FL, and traveled the world with his sweetheart, Lucille. He was tour host and physician for Educational Opportunities, a Christian tour company. He also enjoyed gardening and was a very accomplished piano player. Sheldon was a longtime member of Suntree United Methodist Church. There will be a celebration of life service at Suntree United Methodist Church. The burial will immediately follow the service at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery with full military honors. Friends and family are invited to attend the services. The family also extends heartfelt thanks to Hannah's Home Assisted Living, his caregivers for many years; specifically Kyle, Carolyn, and Linda. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Rd, Melbourne, FL 32940. Visitation will be held one hour prior at the church. Burial with military honors will be held at 1:30PM in Cape Canaveral National Cemetery the same day. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Suntree United Methodist Church, Music Dept-Organ Fund, 7400 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne, FL 32940.
