"When you're gone from here, the only thing that's left of you are those experiences you've given to other people."

Dr. Stephen Eugene Poe, an esteemed figure in the field of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, passed away peacefully at his home on April 20th, surrounded by his loving family, after bravely battling cancer. Steve leaves behind a legacy of dedication, humor, and love that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

Steve was born in Redlands, California on March 19th, 1957 to Eugene Hurley Poe and Jeanne Ann (Yerty) Poe. Raised with a passion for education and innovation, Steve earned his PhD in Agriculture Engineering from Purdue University and dedicated over 35 years of his life to academia. He served as an educator at Purdue University and a distinguished professor at Utah State University and the University of Arizona. His contributions to his field were not only professional but deeply personal, as he inspired countless students with his enthusiasm.

When reflecting on the meaning of life, Steve's answer was simple yet profound: family. “My family is very, very important to me, and probably the best part of me is my family.” For him, family extended beyond blood ties to encompass the experiences shared with others. He understood that the essence of life lies in the connections we forge and the memories we create together. “When you're gone from here, the only thing that's left of you are those experiences you've given to other people.”

Steve leaves behind a devoted family, including his wife: Kitt Farrell-Poe, his son: Joshua Poe, daughters: Kaitlin Poe-Orsburn and Stephanie Poe, grandchildren: Alyson Poe and Tyler Orsburn, his mother: Jeanne Poe, sister: Linda Poe, and brothers: Larry, Dennis, Brian, Doug, and Greg Poe. Their loss is deeply felt, yet their memories of Steve will serve as a beacon of light in the days ahead.

A Celebration of Life open house will be held in honor of Steve at his home in Tucson on Saturday, May 18th, from 2-5pm, where friends and loved ones can gather to share stories and pay tribute to his remarkable life. Additionally, a second Celebration of Life will take place in Palm Desert, California, this October. Further details will be provided at a later date, ensuring that all who wish to commemorate Steve's memory have the opportunity to do so. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering Department at Purdue University or Saguaro National Park East, a place close to Steve's heart where he enjoyed riding his e-bike.

As we bid farewell to a man of integrity, kindness, and boundless spirit, let us carry forward his legacy of love and laughter, knowing that his impact will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Dr. Stephen Eugene Poe may have left this world, but his legacy will live on forever.
