Edith “Ede” Hanley, of Denver, Colorado, died Thursday, December 20, 2018, at the age of 100. Ede was the second of seven children born to Clarence & Freda Sulsberger of Climbing Hill, Iowa. Growing up in Climbing Hill instilled in her a true appreciation for the land and a strong work ethic. From her humble beginnings on the farm, to valedictorian of her high school class to successful Walgreens manager, she was determined to reach her objectives. “Ede” was an enthusiastic worker, retiring at 72, not because she ran out of steam but to spend more time with her family. She was a great saleswoman and embodied the concept that true salesmanship begins when the customer says “no”. Over the years she trained many new cosmetics sales clerks, and her ability to clearly explain procedures and policies, combined with her endless patience, endeared her to all. She worked for Walgreens Drug (now known simply as Walgreens) for 45 years, retiring as the Rocky Mountain District Cosmetics Manager. During those years she earned numerous awards for being the top cosmetics salesperson in the district, as well as, being voted the most courteous district employee by the public. Ede was generous, helping numerous people make their start or get back on their feet. She was the fairest, most honest and straight-forward person most of us have ever known. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, although once she was heard to cuss. Everyone knew that Ede made the best apple pie in town. She was fond of gardening and made juice and jelly from the Concord grape arbor in her yard. She was a dedicated member of the Grant Avenue Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She also enjoyed watching Colorado Rockies games. Edith is survived by daughters: Nancie Phelps of Castle Rock, Lori Hanley of Denver, and Lynn Hanley of Alaska; granddaughter Heather Ashburn, great-granddaughters Olivia, Tatum and Vail, great-great-grandson Miles and son-in-law Milton Kling. She was preceded in death by her parents, her 6 siblings and her husband, Robert Hanley. Ede will be greatly missed, she was our sunshine… A private celebration of life was held for family members. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her beneficent nature by making a memorial donation to help sponsor a child through Childfund International.
