Edna Mae McKenney
February 4th, 1920 - January 1st, 2008
Edna Mae McKenney February 4, 1920 " January 1, 2008 Age: 87 Residence: Gill, Colorado Tribute: Edna Mae McKenney was born in Lamar, CO to John Ellis and Edna May (Rice) Triplett. Her sisters and extended family raised her when her mother died from influenza the day after her birth. She attended the Lamar schools and loved to jump the gate at school on her horse, Rabbit. She married Elmer Floyd White in Lamar in 1937. Their union produced two sons, Harold and Glenn White. Glenn passed away in 1938. The couple were later divorced. On May 3, 1944 she married Barton McKenney in Nebraska. They lived in Colorado Springs where she worked at a stable and rode racehorses. In 1945 she became the only woman to win the Greeley Derby aboard a house named Rolling H. In 1949 the McKenneys moved south of LaSalle and began a life in farming. In 1953 they moved to their farm north of Gill. Mrs. McKenney enjoyed farming and was active on the farm all her life, helping with the dairy as well as the field work. She was also the best of cooks. She often entertained friends and family as well as cooking for the harvest crews. Mrs. McKenney loved all animals especially horses. She loved to watch the great variety of wildlife that ventured through her yard. She continued to feed hundreds of birds until her death. She always had a large garden; a well maintained yard and lots of flowers. At the age of 85, she finally turned over the trimming of her hedge and care of her yard to her two nephews, David Ludwig and Robb Knaub. She spent her later years enjoying the rabbits in her yard, watching the birds at her feeder, and spending summer evenings sitting in her gazebo. Her longtime canine companion and best friend Rowdy will greatly miss her. Mrs. McKenney died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at North Colorado Medical Center. Survivors: her son, Harold McKenney and wife Charlotte of Meeker; five grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
