Edwin J. Alexander

Edwin J. Alexander Jr Melbourne Edwin J. Alexander, 97, died Monday, Sept. 9th at Wuesthoff Hospice in Rockledge. Ed Alexander was born July 20th, 1916 in Carthage (Cincinnati) Ohio. He played football and baseball at the University of Cincinnati. In college, Ed earned varsity letters in baseball (1936, 1938, and 1939) and football (1938). Ed was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Sigma Sigma Society. At UC he would meet the love of his life, Mary Stanford Roark. They married at Langley Field prior to him being shipped off to England where he was a B-24 Navigator-Bombardier for the 8th Air Force. His plane was shot down over Berlin March 18, 1945 and was rescued by the Russians. Ed and Mary moved to Chicago after the war, where they spent fifty years. He sold commercial coffee makers for Cory Corporation, becoming a Vice President. Retiring in 1977, he spent his time tutoring kids, working at homeless shelters and serving as a Deacon in his church. In 1995, Ed and Mary moved to Indian River Colony Club. Ed called it his ""paradise"" and he and Mary enjoyed seven great years together. He chaired the Chapel committee at IRCC and was an avid golfer. Ed is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Bill and Lisa, his niece Ellen Scott, his nephews Barry Cook and Mell Morris, and his granddaughter and grandson-in-law Kristin and Kevin Babic, parents of his great-granddaughter Warner Babic. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2PM Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Faith (Viera) Lutheran Church, 5550 Faith Drive, Rockledge, Fl. Following the service a gathering of friends will be held at the ""At Ease"" Club at IRCC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions of canned goods may be given to local food banks.
