Eleanor I. Bascom
September 16th, 1933 - April 29th, 2024
Eleanor “Ellie” Ida (Vanderpoel) Bascom - 90, passed away on April 29, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Azle, TX. Born on September 16, 1933 in Holyoke, MA to Andrew Peter and Ida Allis (Phinney) Vanderpoel. Eleanor was the eldest of six children. She grew up in Chicopee MA, Burlington CT, and Granby MA. She had fond memories of living near Lake Garda in Burlington, CT. She spent her teen years in Granby and was a 1952 graduate of South Hadley High School, then located in So. Hadley Falls (which is now the Town Hall). She met and married Lincoln L. Bascom and they raised six children in South Hadley Falls, MA. While a stay at home Mom, Ellie babysat and loved several children in her home before going to work as a Bookkeeper for Haberman’s Hardware in Holyoke, MA. She retired in 2010, from Dinn Brothers Trophy in Holyoke, MA where she was an Engraver for 29 years. Ellie loved the Lord and was a long-time active member of Word of Grace Church in Westfield. She enjoyed calligraphy, photography, and spending time outdoors riding her mountain bike, cross-country skiing and hiking at Quabbin Reservoir. She is pre-deceased by her sons Christopher Bascom of Westfield, MA and Paul Bascom of Schenectady, NY and brothers Wilbur Vanderpoel of Kent, WA Peter Vanderpoel of Ware, MA and William Vanderpoel of So. Hadley, MA. She will be deeply missed by surviving sons John (Teresa) Bascom of Butler, PA - Roy (Cheryl) of Westfield, MA and daughters Pam (Willy) Johnston of Azle, TX and Cindy (Garry) Pelletier of Colrain, MA - brother Richard (Althea) Vanderpoel of Bloomfield, CT - sister Peg Slate of Granby, MA sister-in-law Bobbie Vanderpoel of South Hadley, MA and daughter-in-law Mary (Paul) Bascom of Enfield, CT. She leaves 17 Grandchildren, 13 Great-Grandchildren, 10 Great-Great Grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews, as well as her long-time friend Gerry-Darlene Bates and her many neighbors at Hubert Place Senior Housing in So. Hadley Falls. “May She Rest in Peace”
