Elizabeth Enochs
January 1st, 2001
Elizabeth "Terry" Enochs was born Nov. 26, 1916 in Kidder, Missouri, to Roscoe Linn Terry and Geraldine McCrosky Terry. She was the fourth and last child, a tomboy cherished by her mother, grandfather, brothers, and sister. She graduated from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri, with a BA in Biology and began teaching high school in the Springfield City Schools. She met James Enochs while working on her masters at the University of Chicago, and they married on May 29, 1943. Terry and Jim spent the early months of their marriage in Chicago, enjoying the opera, symphony, art museums and plays. Terry and Jim spent the next decades moving from city to city, as Jim worked on his doctorate and began his career in higher education. Daughter Nancy was born in Columbia, Missouri in 1945, son Shelton in Denver, Colorado in 1947, and son Robert in San Francisco, California in 1951. Jim's work within the California State College system took the family in 1948 to San Francisco, in 1952 to Sacramento, in 1958 to Claremont, and in 1963 to Santa Rosa. Terry resumed teaching in Sacramento (Lincoln Junior High School); completed her MA at Sacramento State College in 1957, honoring a promise made to her mother; and continued teaching in Claremont (El Roble Junior High) and Santa Rosa (Cook Junior High and Rincon Valley Junior High) until her retirement in 1975. After retirement, Terry and Jim relocated to Ashland, Oregon. Terry was an active volunteer, supporting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Trinity Episcopal Church, PEO, and the Ashland Symphony Orchestra for many years. She was a wonderful, warm hostess and her home was often the hub for planning and fund raising activities. Terry was a woman of many interests and skills: she was widely known for her angel food cakes and other decadent desserts; she made beautiful needlepoint Christmas stockings; she was an expert seamstress; and, she was an avid gardener and cook. Many, many friends, children, grandchildren and non-profit raffle winners are wearing sweaters she hand-knit over the years. She loved to have a good martini, a good time, and a good laugh. Terry moved to Chico in 2005 to live near family, but never stopped missing her friends in Ashland. Terry and Jim were married almost 50 years until he preceded her in death in February of 1993. Terry died on March 31, 2012 in Chico. She is survived by daughter, Nancy Means (Scott) of San Diego; grandson, Colin Means (Sara); and great-grandson, Connor; son, Shelton Enochs (Mary Tribbey) of Chico; grandson, James Enochs; granddaughters, Molly Enochs and Jennie Markoff (Noah); and great-grandsons, Shea and Eddie; son, Robert Enochs (Sharyn Bratsberg) of Santa Rosa; grandchildren, Justin, Julianna and Jordan Bratsberg; granddaughters, Megan and Erin Enochs, and their mother, Judy Enochs of Santa Rosa. Terry was a great neighbor, a great friend, and a devoted, tolerant matriarch to the Enochs clan. She will be missed tremendously. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, Oregon.
