Elizabeth "Betsy" Jean Haslett
January 11th, 1931 - January 3rd, 2023
Elizabeth “Betsy” Jean Haslett, born January 11, 1931, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 3, 2023 at Wesley Des Moines Senior Living Center after an extended illness. Betsy was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended Penn State University and did her graduate work in audiology at Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia. She moved to the Seattle, Washington area almost 50 years ago where she practiced as a PhD Audiologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Betsy was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Normandy Park UCC where she still has many friends. As an avid football fan, her favorite teams were the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Huskies. She travelled extensively all over the world and had a special fondness for Great Britain. Betsy found great joy in volunteer work and she was a supporter of the Wesley Community Foundation. She had many friends at Wesley for whom she loved to share a game of Scrabble or Bridge. Her greatest joy however was her family. She continually made us feel special and was always on time with a birthday card or a phone call. When each of her nieces and nephew reached the age of 10, she provided them with an all expense paid trip to Seattle to visit the Space Needle, ride the ferry, visit the fish market, and meet her friends for dinner. Her unique, friendly, generous self will be greatly missed. She is survived by her cousin Jack (Kathy)McCandless of Leesburg, Fl, nieces Lisa (Marty) Murphy and Jackie (Lynn) Mohnkern of Charlotte, NC, Kim (Jim)Edeus of Cranberry, Pennsylvania, nephew Jeffrey McCandless of St. Petersburg, Fl, and many great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Gertrude and Allan Haslett, her Aunt Fran and Uncle Bob McCandless, cousin Judy McCandless Mohnkern, and niece Julie McCandless. A memorial service will be held in early May at the Southminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Mary’s Place or Wesley Homes Circle of Concern, both in Seattle, Washington.
