Ellen M. Haggerty
August 2nd, 1924 - February 4th, 2012
"Palmer- Ellen M. Haggerty, 87, a lifelong resident of Palmer, died on February 4 at Mercy Medical Center. She was born August 2, 1924 in Palmer, MA the daughter of Michael and Ellen (Looney) Grimes. Ellen was a communicant of St. Thomas Church and active in the Rosary Sodality. She graduated from Salem State College and obtained her Masters Degree from AIC where she also taught in the summer program. She was a teacher at Natick High School and Commerce High School and as a substitute teacher at Palmer High School prior to becoming a Professor of Business Systems at STCC for 10 years. She also served as Secretary for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and was was very active as a literacy volunteer and instructor, 4H Club Leader and with the YMCA Day Camp. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 52 years, Walter A. Haggerty, daughters, Anne Haggerty and her partner Kathleen Whalen of W. Medford, MA, Eileen Haggerty of Waltham, MA, son, Christopher Haggerty and his partner Sandra Raymond of Sandy Hook, CT, along with her four cherished grandchildren, Patrick, Catherine, Nora and Helen. Her two brothers, John of Palmer and William and his wife Kathleen of Springfield and devoted sister-in-law, Marie Fay also survive her. Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Beers and Story Palmer Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
