Elmer Gene Conrad of Tacoma Washington passed away on May 7, 2023, at the age of 92. Gene was a loving husband, father, and son. His passing will leave a big hole in many hearts. Gene was born on April 21, 1931, in Pulaski Tennessee. He joined the Air Force in 1950. While in the service he met and later married Mary Ann Moore in 1959. Prior to his passing they had celebrated over 63 years of marriage. Over the years they had 3 children. Gene spent more than 22 years serving our country. Having received The Air Force Commendation Medal, he retired as Master Sergeant in 1974. After his service he returned with his family to make his home in Washington State where he became a business owner. Gene enjoyed playing pool and golfing, but his one true passion was racing. He was able to fulfill this love of racing in 1988 by taking to the track in the Compact class. He won Rookie of the Year that same year. From there he won multiple races and even won the coveted Championship in 1992. He later raced part time along with his son, eventually letting him take the wheel as Gene become a car owner up to the NASCAR level. Gene loved telling stories about his military days, racing career or growing up in Tennessee. Some of his fondest memories were the family trips to his hometown having his parents, wife, and children in the same place. Gene grew up with old-fashioned values that he passed on to his children by example. He was someone people looked up to, went to for advice and was liked and respected by everyone that knew him. Gene had a sense of humor that often came out of nowhere and could make everyone laugh. Gene was predeceased by his father (Ollie), mother (Grace), stepfather (Robert), sister (Linda), brother (Paul) and his daughter (Tina). He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Brenda (Robert), son Troy (Elizabeth). His grandchildren Barry, Brendy, Zack, Jaydn, Kolton, Zoe, Gracie and Connie. His two great grandchildren Aspen and Blakely. Services will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery on May 25, 2023, at 10:30 am.
