Beers and Story - Belchertown
Elsie T. Degnan
March 24th, 1917 - August 12th, 2019
"Monson - Elsie (Thomas) Degnan entered Heaven peacefully on August 12, 2019 at the age of 102 with the mental acuity many would envy. Born March 24, 1917 in Methuen, MA, she was the daughter of Guy and Jane (Howard) Thomas. Elsie graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School, and worked for an investment firm in Boston. She and her husband, Vernon, moved to Monson in 1955, spending many years at Old Stagecoach Lake before retiring to the coast of Maine, and returned to Monson in 2000. She worked at both Palmer and Monson Savings Banks until her retirement in 1979. Elsie was a long time member of First Church of Monson, and later attended Evangelical Covenant Church. Among the many things she enjoyed in life was spending time with her family and watching the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. She will long be remembered as a prim and proper lady whose sharp mind never left her. She will be deeply missed by her two sons, Donald Degnan and his wife Marcia of Palmer and Richard Degnan and his wife Cyndie of Monson, with whom she lived for many years. She also leaves four precious grandchildren(who called her Grammy) Scott, Eric, Wendy and Amy, along with her eight great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Madison, Austin, Serena, Miranda, Owen, Jillian and Joshua. Besides her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Vernon in 2002 and her grandson Michael in 2015. Calling hours will be Monday, August 19 from 5-7 PM at the Beers and Story Palmer Funeral Home. Burial will be the following day in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, MA. For those wishing to honor her memory, donations may be made to MDA in memory of Michael Degnan, 33 Lyman St, #205, Westborough, MA 01581 or Rockland Congregational Church,180 Limerock St,Rockland,ME, 04841.
