Esther Olive Boesen

October 9th, 1914 - April 17th, 2012

Esther O. Boesen, 97, of Nampa passed away peacefully in the company of family on Tuesday April 17, 2012, at Life Care Center of Treasure Valley. Esther was born in Boelus, Nebraska, to Dorsey and Emma Stolley Coons. As a young girl she attended Ebenezer Methodist Church, an old German Methodist Church. She continued to be active in the Methodist Church her entire life. She married Kermit Boesen October 28, 1938, in Boelus, NE. Her oldest son Dennis was born on the homestead where Kermit was born. They moved to Grand Island, NE, where their youngest son James was born. Esther enjoyed square dancing when Kermit played fiddle at local dances. After moving to Idaho, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Janis. In the years that followed they farmed near Nampa, operated a hardware store in Notus and then farmed nearby, and were active in the Notus community before making their home in Nampa in 1966. She was an excellent cook who made fabulous fruit pies and breads, especially cinnamon-raisin bread and rye bread. Her fruit pies were very popular auction items at Nampa First United Methodist Church bazaars. She enjoyed playing cards of any sort with her many friends in Nampa and Caldwell. Esther worked for the Nampa school district for several years, at the Migrant Education Resource Center, for the Canyon County Sherriff’s Office, and Persons-Flahiff Funeral Chapel. She also volunteered for the Nampa Civic Center and other Nampa community charities. Esther was preceded in death by Kermit in 1972, her sister Vera in 1986 and her son James in 1994. She is survived by her son Dennis and his wife Betsy of Albuquerque, NM, her daughter Janis and her husband Mike Reed, of Boise, granddaughters Stacy Purcell and Jennifer Reed, grandsons Tom and Chris, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 2717 12th Avenue Road, Nampa. Private inurnment will be at Kohlerlawn Cemetery, Nampa. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Nampa, a Hospice organization, or a favorite charity. Condolences can be made online at www.flahifffuneralchapel.com . I’ve been thinking a lot about our friend Esther, since Mahlon let us know that she had passed away. Our family got acquainted with her when she & I worked at Flahiff-Persons Funeral Chapel, in Nampa. She was such a lively, inspirational, Godly woman. She helped me through a tough time in my life & I enjoyed many cups of coffee & home made goodies in her home. The last time we went to see her which was since Christmas, she didn’t know us & wondered why we came to see her, my husband, Don is so good at visiting with older people, told her she was our friend & we loved her, the time before we went to see her she knew us & named all four of our kids by name. An interesting thing happened about 20 years ago, she introduced our son to his wife & that has been one of the best things that has ever happened to our family. She had often told me that she knew they were “right” for each other if she could just get them together. God IS good. Thank you, Esther for being a very Godly example to me of what a true Christian is.

Marvin, Clarke, Kelly Boesen

Aunt Esther was always a "best" aunt! Warm, funny and wonderful! What a life! From "saving" Clarke''s life when older twin brothers Marvin and Marc had him pinned at the neck by the tines of a pitchfork against the side of a barn, to showing Kelly''s kids a grand time when they visited briefly while travelling cross country, aunt Esther was great! Deepest sympathies to her family. Marvin, Clarke, Kelly Boesen and families.

I moved across the street from Esther in 1987 as a single mom with 3 tween-teen kids. I lived there until all the kids were grown and on their own. She was such a wonderful neighbor, never a complaint of any kind; although with crazy life of kids and their friends, she probably had cause. She allowed me to teach my son the value of kind deeds when he shoveled snow from her walk. While she agreed to my request of no compensation he did received a hugh bag of popcorn balls (some with dollar bills tied on) most every Halloween. When I told him of her passing he said "she was the sweetest lady and made the BEST popcorn balls". She also shared her Christmas wreath cookie recipe which is now a family tradition. She once told me when she got to heaven she had a few questions for God. Mainly why he took her son, not her. I trust her questions have been answered and she is peacefully enjoying her reward. We were so blessed by knowing her and our thoughts our with you all. Diane Markus Mindy, Amy and Joe Franssen
