Ethel J. Hutchins September 22, 1925 - August 17, 2015 On August 17, 2015 just one month shy of her 90th birthday Ethel Hutchins passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by family and friends of a rare lung cancer. She was born in Eagle, Wisconsin and grew up in East Troy, Wisconsin on her family farm. After high school she came to Oregon married and had three children and eventually was divorced. She then met the love of her life, Prescott (Hutch) Hutchins. They married May 31, 1963 and were married for 37 years (Hutch passed away September 25, 2000). After Hutch retired from the Police Force in April of 1972 they owned and operated The Hutch Tavern for 5 years. Ethel and Hutch loved to travel. They took many trips to Hawaii and went on numerous Cruises. They enjoyed their RV trips, boats, had a cabin at Detroit Lake, and owned shares of Pixieland, in Lincoln City. In February of 1983 they became “snow birds” and purchased their home in Yuma, AZ. Ethel loved Winter Gardens and all of Winter Gardens loved her. After Hutch passed she traveled more; Italy, Spain, Tahiti, New York, Hawaii, Canada, Whidbey Island. She loved to go camping (sleeping in her first tent at the age of 80). Ethel is Survived by, son, Bill Sturgeon & his wife Maria; daughter, Sandy Moreno & her husband Al Rackley; daughter, Diane Englestad; grandson, Jason Chandler; great-grandson, Kaylan Chandler; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends around the country. Ethel was a great joke teller and could spin off multiple Jokes from her incredible memory. She loved to stop in Laughlin, NV on her way to Yuma and play the slot machines. She was an excellent cook and was especially well known for her famous potato salad. Her perfectly crisp clothes and accessories always matched. She was a beautiful lady. She was called the Tomato Queen; always had a bumper crop. She was always up for a party, happy hour, dinner out, BBQ and Al’s Adventures. Ethel loved her family, her friends, life, tomatoes, crab, travel, having fun, her Yuma family/friends, her yard, her homes in both Yuma and Portland and, of course, Vodka. The next time you eat a tomato, have a happy hour and/or drink Vodka remember Ethel and the gift her life was to all of us. Ethel had a wonderful full life. She would say “I’ve had a great time.” She was a beautiful lady, wife, mom, grandmother, and friend. She was loved dearly and will be missed so very much. A Celebration of Life and Toast will be held at Ethel's home on Sunday August 30, 2015 at 3:30 PM Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 330 SW Curry St. Portland, OR 97239.
