Eugene Jackson Howell

July 18th, 1926 - August 6th, 2024

Born July 18, 1926 to parents William and Sarah Ann Howell in Webber Falls, OK, passed away August 6, 2024, in Oroville, CA.

Since Gene was a young boy, he wanted to play music. After serving in the military in the Philippines and Japan, he bought his first guitar.

After completing his military service, he came home and settled in Bakersfield, CA, area. While living there, he was able to work as a DJ at a local radio station. Before long his guitar playing paid off and he joined a Country Western Band. He played in the band with Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky and was able to travel for several months as they toured the United States.

Becoming weary of the fast paced lifestyle, he decided to settle down in Chico, CA, where he met and married Bertie (Bea) Hegel. Soon after they married they relocated to Yuba City, CA. He was able to purchase a service station at the corner of Percy Avenue and Garden Hwy.

After Bertie passed away in 1990, he met Maxine Thomas and they were married in 1991. Gene and Maxine were members of Cooper Avenue Baptist Church. Gene continued playing his guitar in church and various venues around Northern California. After he retired and Maxine passed away in 2011, he continued to keep his faith in God strong.

Gene is survived by his son, James Whatley(Mary); grandsons, Aaron Whatley (Kristine), Eli Whatley (Macee); and great- grandchildren, Kyle, Darren, Ashley, Alexis, Ryker and Jax; stepson, Ron Hegel; stepdaughter, Maejean Foskett; loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dad, you were loved by so many customers, neighbors, friends and family. We are blessed to call you Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Gene and friend. Rest in peace, we love you.

Viewing will be available from 4pm-7pm at Ullreys Memorial Chapel on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
