Dr. Eugene J. Tom, 49, of Charlotte, died unexpectedly on June 28, 2018. Born April 15, 1969 to Jin Hon “Johnny” and Eva Lau Tom in Charlotte, Gene excelled at every stage of his life. A student of Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools, Gene earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University. He then graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, though he remained to true to his Blue Devil roots. Following his residency at UNC Hospitals, Gene returned to his native Charlotte where he was a Board Certified anesthesiologist with Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants. Gene’s life centered on service to his family, friends, and patients. His life’s work was to administer comfort to people during their most vulnerable and fearful moments, an oath he steadfastly followed. But his true love was his family and friends and the comfort he received from time with them. He will be lovingly remembered for his generosity of time and talents and for the sincerity with which he forged real relationships with those he encountered, regardless of their station in life. Preceded in death by his father, Gene is survived by his mother, to whom Gene was eternally devoted, and his fiancée, Molly Skipper, with whom he shared unconditional love for the last five years. He is also survived by his beloved brother, Raymond Tom, sister-in-law, Karey, and his favorite niece, Evie, whom he treasured and loved beyond measure. A memorial service and celebration of Gene’s life will be held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Covenant Church, 800 Fullwood Lane, Matthews, North Carolina. The family will receive visitors at Christ Covenant Church prior to the service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gene’s memory to HopeWay, 1717 Sharon Road West, Charlotte, NC 28210. The family appreciates the support and prayers of friends near and far that Gene may now forever experience the peace and comfort which he so ably rendered to others.
