Eugenia Bivens

Eugenia Ivey Bivens Mrs. Bivens, 91, of Charlotte, NC, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Southminster Retirement Community. She was born April 29, 1919 in Lenoir, NC, daughter of the late Annie Vasseur Ivey and Eugene Claywell Ivey. She grew up in Hickory and attended Claremont Central High School. Mrs. Bivens graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College where she studied to become a teacher. Following a brief teaching career, Eugenia and her sister, Virginia, went to work for the FBI. Eugenia would work for the FBI for the next thirty-five years. While at the FBI she met her future husband and the one love of her life, Winfred Lee ?Wint? Bivens, owner, at that time, of Black?s Drug Store in Hickory. They retired to Charlotte in 1977. She was a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bivens enjoyed gardening, playing golf, bridge, and was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed entertaining, cooking and always valued her adventures in life. Her family will miss her lovely smile and her gracious presence. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bivens was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Ivey Hord and Mary Stuart Ivey Hitner and her nephew, Stuart Hitner. She is survived by her step-son, Fred Bivens, whom she loved like her own son, and his wife Susan Douglas of Wylie, Texas, and a niece, Janice Calvert and her husband, Tim, of Moore, SC. During the last 12 years of her life, Mrs. Bivens was lovingly cared for by the staff at Southminster Retirement Community and her cousin, Jim Pugh, and his wife, Linda. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 10:00 AM in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, NC with the Rev. Robert Roach officiating. A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM in the Chapel of Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte with the Rev. Gary Hudson officiating.
