Evelyn Margaret Caccia
December 26th, 1921 - May 8th, 2017
Evelyn Margaret Caccia (Marlow), age 95 of Jackson, CA. passed away Monday, May 8, 2017. Evelyn was born in Vermont on December 26, 1921 to Margaret (Sullivan) and Wallace Marlow. She was preceded by her husband Geno Joseph Caccia in 1981. Mom was raised on a dairy farm in New Hampshire with her late brother, Francis Marlow. Being a child on a farm was a happy time for her: swimming in the creek, playing with her friends, swinging from a tree rope and best of all having snow cones topped with maple syrup from their maple trees. Life was busy from sun up to sun down caring for dairy cows, pigs, goats, chickens, sheep, horses, cats and dogs. Mom walked 2 miles a day (rain, shine or snow) to the one room school house and graduated with 12 other students. She went on to Nashua General Hospital in New Hampshire and received her nursing degree in 1942 and became a registered nurse. Evelyn enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 during WWII. She was transferred from Brooklyn Naval Hospital in New York to Camp Adair in Corvallis, OR. This Navy base had 5,000 people during wartime. Here she met her future husband, Geno Caccia. He also served in the Navy as a medic assigned to the Marines in the invasions of Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian Islands in the Pacific during WWII. After their marriage in 1945, Evelyn and Geno moved to Pennsylvania where Dad's family were coal miners. Evelyn went home to Walpole, NH to have her children and receive care from her parents. From Pennsylvania the family moved West in 1952 settling in Redwood City where they worked and raised their children, Janet and Edward. Mother worked at Sequoia Hospital as well as being a homemaker. TV dinners were unknown to our family. Mom sent care packages to Edward in Korea, much to the amazement of his Army buddies. She also was a seamstress and made dance costumes for Janet. Mother created another life for herself when she moved to Jackson in 1990. She was an active volunteer of: Hospice Thrift Store, Christmas in July and the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to the Jackson Woman's Club, American Legion Post 108 and the Young Ladies Institute of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was an active member of the church and a devout Catholic. She enjoyed these friendships and their shared activities. Mom would drive her friends to meetings even when she was 92. She so much enjoyed her independence when she was driving. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Janet Margaret Caccia (favored son in law, Gary Davis) of Pine Grove, CA; son, Edward Geno Caccia of San Rafael, CA; grandson, Michael Geno Caccia of Benicia, CA; grandchildren, Chris Davis (Marina), Mary Davis McMillan (Spencer); great nana to Clay, Logan and Noah; many cousins, nieces and nephews. A special thank you to all who have cared for our mother so lovingly her 27 years in Jackson: the many nurses, Dr. Zineski (25 years), Dr. Pourzia, Dr. Pettersen; Amador Hospital (and the emergency room), Kit Carson, Oak Manor, Bristol Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and Helping Hands. All have been truly wonderful. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon. Donations may be made in her name to a charity of your choice or Common Ground Senior Center, Meals on Wheels Program at 229 New York Ranch Rd, Jackson, CA 95642.
