Evelyn Susan Enslow
August 16th, 1923 - April 18th, 2015
Evelyn Enslow (born Susan Evelyn Citrone on August 16, 1923), CEC, AAC, lost her battle with heart disease and cancer on April 18 th 2015 at the age of 91. Evelyn was married to George P. Enslow, a World War II veteran, for 28 years until his death on October 5, 1974. Together they had 4 children: Patty Rodriguez, Renton; Mimi (Mark) MacDonald, Shoreline; Jerry (Judi) Enslow, Shelton; and Mark (Linda) Enslow (Lake Stevens). Evelyn had 1 stepson, Bob Enslow of Shelton. She was Gram to 11 grandkids: Ben Rodriguez (Katie), Shelly Bratton (Steven), Lisa Thompson, Melissa Hnosko (Jonathan), Tony Enslow, Tyler Enslow, Katie Enslow and Jacob Enslow, Jason (Christie) Pearsall (Christie), Shannon (Peter) Cousland, and Jodi Enslow. Evelyn had nine great-grandchildren who called her GG: Eleanor Rodriguez, Samantha Bratton, Noah Bratton, Chase Rooks, Levi Hnosko, Cora Hnosko, Ezra Hnosko, Olivia Pearsall, Eric Pearsall.Evelyn also left behind family in NY. Although, she was the only living sibling, Evelyn had many nieces and nephews. Sandi and Harry Vanderslice, her niece and Sandis husband, visited often as did Sandis children. We appreciated their visits and keeping mom connected with her family in NY.Evelyn was born and raised in Mamaroneck, NY. One of nine children, her mother died when Evelyn was 3 years old so she was raised by her father, Marco Citrone, and her oldest sister, Annie Soriano. Evelyn married George at 24 years old and helped in the three restaurants George owned in New York City. She brought a pot of homemade pea soup in one day to the restaurant and everyone loved it. After that, she made soups every day for the customers, starting her culinary career. In 1948, George and Evelyn moved to the Seattle area and she spent most of her life living on Beacon Hill until she moved to Harstine Island in South Sound where she lived for 25 years next to her Son, Jerry and his wife Judi. Evelyn loved living on the water and enjoyed sitting on the deck her grandson, Jake, built for her. One of her greatest loves and companions was a little furry puppy dog named Jelly Bean. After an illness in January 2014, Evelyn came back to the Seattle area and lived at Edmonds Bay Adult Family Home where they cared for her like she was their mom. We are very appreciative of their devotion to our Mom and all of their residents. Evelyn was a well-known Executive Chef in the Seattle area. She was a longtime member of the Washington State Chef Association and held the office of president in the 80s. Evelyn was a member of the American Culinary Federation and one of the first women to be inducted into the American Academy of Chef after earning her designations of Certified Executive Chef. She continued to be an active member through the years and was a guest instructor at many Community College culinary programs. Evelyn also participated in many culinary shows and contests and for years served as a judge at Oyster Fest in Shelton, WA. Her work history included serving as Executive Chef at the Bellevue Athletic Club, Sunshine Club, Thunderbird - Red Lion chain, Pier 91 Federal base, and more. Evelyn and her husband owned Lynnes Caf, a restaurant in the West Seattle junction back in the 60s where she honed her restaurant skills. For at least ten years, Evelyn also ran a catering business handling many parties, weddings, and memorial services. She, and the students of South Sound Community College, had the privilege of preparing and serving the food at Governor Gary Locks Inaugural Ball in 1997.The events most remembered by Evelyns family and close friends were the Sunday dinners around Evelyns family table. It became a tradition! She was an excellent chef in all types of food but for those privileged to enjoy Sunday meals with her, she excelled at Italian food. Once you experienced the Italian culture and food, you fell madly in love with Evelyn.Next to her family, food was Evelyns love and life and she was in her glory in the kitchen. Those who worked for her in the kitchen would admit she had a witches broom in the corner; she demanded their all! Evelyn mentored, trained, and encouraged many young hopefuls and, while feared by all in training, she was always loved, respected, and known as Chef. The family appreciates the visits made to Evelyn by Chef Walter Bronowitz and Chef Bill class=st1 Wiklendt during her final years. Most importantly, Evelyn loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She felt privileged to be Mom, Gram, and GG. In the end, they were all she could talk about and she worried over each and every one of them.Evelyns departure leaves a big hole in the hearts and lives of those she touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Evelyns honor to Seattle Childrens Hospital, Washington State Chefs Association Scholarship or your favorite charity.
