Frances L. Griffith died peacefully on January 13, 2019 at the age of 89 in her home of fifty-nine years in Falls Church, Virginia, surrounded by her family. Frances was born in Quantico, Virginia on April 2, 1929, the oldest of three siblings, Barbara Ferris and Buddy Depoorter, who pre-deceased her. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Washington, D.C., Central High School in Washington D.C. (now Cardoza) and graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia in 1947. She is survived by Frederick P. Griffith, Jr., her husband of 67 years; her 6 children, Frederick P. Griffith III and wife, Barbara; Stephanie Gallups; Leslie Daisley and husband, Gordon; Claudia Young; Christopher Griffith and wife, Susan; and Samantha Kearney and husband, Thomas; as well as 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Frances loved collecting early American antiques, gardening and decorating her beautiful home. She was an artist with a needle and thread and won awards for her primitive embroidered portraits, scenes and quilts at the Gunston Hall and Oatlands Plantation needlework shows. Her work was also put on exhibition at George Mason University. Frances was a wonderful homemaker and loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, and was an avid fan of Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Tom Brady. The family will receive guests at Advent Funeral Home located at 7211 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia, on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass will be held on Saturday, January 19, at 10:00 AM at Saint James Catholic Church, 830 W Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia. A reception will be held immediately following the Mass at Irelands Four Provinces, 105 W Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Frances Griffith’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or the charity of your choice.
