Francis George Saukel, Jr.

October 5th, 1949 - August 17th, 2024

Francis George Saukel Jr. was born on October 5, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA to Francis and Evelyn (Ziegler) Saukel and was welcomed into heaven surrounded by his family on August 17, 2024, at the age of 74.

The son of a police officer, Frank learned the value of service throughout his childhood, culminating in his graduation from Connelly Vocational High School in 1967. In March 1969, Frank enlisted in the United States Navy, graduating from boot camp at Great Lakes, IL.

Frank married childhood friend, Christine Catherine Kamp, also of Pittsburgh, on April 29, 1972, and the pair embarked on a 52-year adventure around the world facilitated by Frank’s service in the United States Navy. During his successful 24-year career with the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Forces, Frank would make Chief (E-7), in Oct 1976, before accepting a direct commission as a Nuclear Weapons Officer in Guam in 1980, and ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Commander (O-4). Along the way, they would welcome their children Karen (in Hawaii), Jeremy (in VA Bch), and Laura (in Scotland) before ultimately settling in Satellite Beach in 1986.

Following Frank’s retirement from the Navy, he would go on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Rollins College in 1995 before settling into another few decades of continued service as a contractor working with the United Launch Alliance at Cape Canaveral.

In retirement, Frank enjoyed golfing, completing home improvement projects with his children, playing darts, caring for his lawn and pool, playing Pokémon Go, and being in the service and presence of others. Never one to seek admiration or credit, Frank reveled in celebrating the accomplishments of others, often with a cold beverage in hand. He also dedicated his time to United States Submarine Veterans events, entertainment productions at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church as well as guiding young children through the Holy Name of Jesus RCIA program for 20 years, alongside his wife. Prior to his passing, Frank personified contentedness throughout his two (2) year battle with esophageal cancer, especially in the presence of his family. He carried himself with immeasurable grace and resolve.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Janet Falvo.

He is loved and greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Chris, his children, Karen, Jeremy and wife, Jill, and Laura and husband Micah; his granddaughters, Summer, Rilynn, and Ainsley; and countless extended family members and friends he lovingly engaged with.

A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 AM on September 10, 2024, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church; with a reception to follow on site, in the Community Room. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Frank’s honor to Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

His cremains will be placed in the Memorial Garden at Holy Name of Jesus following the mass.

Dear Christine, family and friends of Frank, On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Frank´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Henry Clay SSBN-625 and USS George Bancroft SSBN-643. To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country. Christine and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV). My deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family at this most difficult of times. I met Frank shortly after moving from the Panama Canal Zone on DOD priority placement to take a civilian job with the US Air Force (ESMC at that time) with my three young sons in tow (my husband stayed behind for an additional two years). Frank was a pleasure to work with. He was a very competent team player and a gracious teacher to those who lacked his experience/knowledge. I will always be grateful for his insights which made my job easier. He positively touched the lives of many. Prayers for his family.
