September 4th, 1927 - January 17th, 2014
Frank Anthony La Porta, age 86, of Gloversville, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home with his loving family at his side. He was born on September 4, 1927 to Clemente and Sue La Porta. He is survived by his four brothers, Joseph Gloria, Ralph Barbara, Vincent Jean, and Alphonso as well as 8 nephews, 11 nieces, and several great-nephews and great-nieces. Frank attended the former St. Francis De Sales School and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1945. He received an Associate in Arts Degree from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in 1971. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and served as Grand Knight of the local council. He served as President of the Gloversville Water Board for 19 years. He retired from the Leader-Herald in 1993, after working 30 years in the composing room. He served as Mayor of Gloversville from 2002-2005 and was instrumental in encouraging Wal-Mart to construct a super center in Gloversville. This store opened in 2013. He was honored by the city with the naming of the roundabout in front of Wal-Mart as La Porta Circle. Frank was an amazing person who was filled with kindness and love. He will be remembered for his selfless and kind spirit. He was cherished and loved by his four brothers, eight nephews and eleven nieces and everyone who knew him. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, January 19th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville, with the Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak as celebrant. Interment will take place in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Church of the Holy Spirit, Preservation Fund; 151 S. Main St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
