Simplicity: Lowcountry Cremation and Burial Services - North Charleston
Fred Larry Smalls
January 23rd, 1953 - November 4th, 2023
It was a cold afternoon on Friday, January 23,1953 when I entered this world. My parents Oliver B Smalls, Sr and Sara H Smalls were happy to receive another boy. My older sister Sandra (who preceded me in death) and Oliver, Jr welcomed me into the family. Being that I was third in the sibling line I got to welcome younger sister Yvonne into the family years later. In my primary years, I acquired a speech impediment. Many times, it took me awhile to communicate effectively when I spoke. Even though I was teased many times, I learned that if I took my time to express myself my speech impediment would improve. I was reared to go to Sunday school and church every Sunday. I believe and love the Lord. As I lay here, I realize how good God has been to me. I confessed my sins, ask for forgiveness and gave my life to all mighty Lord. I attended and graduated from Charleston County primary schools and received my high school diploma from Burke High School in 1972. I enjoy listening to old school music, watching television, reading, communicating and socializing with my partners and spending time with my family. I worked various jobs and held various positions in the Charleston area, including MUSC, Roper Hospital, Charleston Naval Shipyard, which included areas of maintenance, supply, plumbing and environmental services. I retired from the College of Charleston in 2018. I enjoyed my retirement for a while. Then I came across an opportunity to go back to work part-time. While working part time I became ill. I was back and forth from the hospital to rehab. My body was getting weaker and weaker. My brother and sister were always there providing words of encouragement and assistance. On Saturday evening November 4th I was called to be with the Lord. He called my name- Fred L Smalls, and I was happy to answer. You see to be absent from the body means I am present with the Lord. Oh! What a beautiful Day! My many memories are cherished by my brother Oliver Jr. (Cynthia) and my little sister Yvonne. I also leave fond memories with a host of nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews’ cousins and friends. May I leave you with this thought”. He put his arms around me and lifted me to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization.
